The Inactivation of Bacteriophage by Mercury Bichloride; the Reactivation of Bichloride-inactivated Phage
نویسندگان
چکیده
1. The inactivation of antistaphylococcus bacteriophage suspended in infusion broth at pH 7.6 and 22 degrees C. by HgCl(2) proceeds according to the equation dP/dt = k [HgCl(2)] [P(o) - P(i)] over the range studied. 2. This inactivation can be reversed by precipitation of Hg(++) with H(2)S. In the present experiments the inactivation was carried out until only some 5 per cent of the initial phage remained active. After reactivation the [P] had increased to 100 per cent of the initial [P].

There are at the present time two schools of thought with reference to the nature of bacteriophage. One group, championed chiefly by d'Herelle and Burner, considers phage to consist of living "corpuscles," while the other group views the lyric principle as partaking of all the major characteristics of an enzyme. A study of the kinetics of the bacterium-bacteriophage reaction by Krueger and Nort...

متن کاملThe Reversible Inactivation of Bacteriophage by Bichloride of Mercury
1. The complete inactivation of antistaphylococcal phage by HgCl(2) (2.8 per cent for 216 hours) can be reversed by precipitation of Hg(++) with restoration of the phage to its original titre. 2. This behavior seems more compatible with the known properties of certain enzymes than with those of living protoplasm.

Introduction: Inorganic mercury intoxication is rare and usually the result of occupational exposure, suicide attempt or accident. This article presents the case of acute poisoning due to peritoneal lavage with mercury bichloride. Case report: A 30 year old woman was operated in order to remove a teratoma from her right ovary. On the second postoperative day she presented ileus, renal failure a...
متن کاملClinical Uses of 2,3-dimercaptopropanol (bal). Xi. the Treatment of Acute Mercury Poisoning by Bal.
The extensive investigations upon the mechanism by which arsenic poisons the protoplasm of cells (1, 2) and the discovery (1) that the di-thiol, 2,3-dimercaptopropanol or BAL (British AntiLewisite), possesses an avidity for Lewisite and trivalent arsenicals, thus sparing injury to the cells and their essential enzymes, led to the suggestion that the toxic action of other metals might be explain...
